Spring Cleaning: Wardrobe Edition

Spring Cleaning: Wardrobe Edition

Tuesday marked the official first day of spring. Spring cleaning is an essential ritual for any fashionista looking to make room for new summer clothes and generally revamp their wardrobe. Here some ideas on how to clean out your closet.

1. Get rid of items you've neglected

If you're holding onto items you haven't taken proper care of, get rid of them. Shoes that are completely beat up, or jackets with buttons missing you know you'll never sew back on shouldn't take up space in your closet.

2. Hold onto the basics you'll always need

There are certain pieces everyone needs. Solid pairs of blue jeans, perfect button up shirts etc. These are the clothes you'll wear year round and can be matched with trendier pieces seasonally.

3. Say goodbye to overly trendy pieces

With fast fashion so popular these days, it's likely you have a couple items in your closet you've only worn once. It may have been on trend a couple months ago, but it probably looks silly now.

4. Prioritize classics and comfort

One major plus of cleaning out your closet is rediscovering your favorite clothes that have been completely buried. Give the prime real estate in your closet to your favorite pieces that are timeless, comfortable or the epitome of your personal style.

5. The cardinal rule: if you don't love it, lose it

Lastly if you don't love an item anymore, say goodbye to it. Clothes, in our opinion, should make you happy and excited to wear them, so if a piece isn't doing that for you anymore - sayonara.

How to Rock Spring's Trickiest Denim Trend

How to Rock Spring's Trickiest Denim Trend

It's undeniable - vintage jeans are huge this spring. When fitted correctly, the perfect pair of old levi's can become the most versatile and comfortable jeans in your closet. But for anyone who's tried on a pair and been terrified that they look like Tina Fey in that infamous SNL Mom Jeans Sketch - we're here to help. Follow these tips below:

IMG_2353.jpg

1. Forget Your Size

No really forget it because it's useless. When it comes to vintage denim, you'll be shocked at how different each pair fits depending on age. The same exact styles in the same "size" can truly fit and look completely different on. Get ready to try on a lot of pairs because you'll want to see how each forms to your body. Try to look at the waist of the jeans, since this will be the hardest part to fit correctly, and find pairs that you'll be comfortable in. As a general rule of thumb though, older denim runs small.

2. Remember Denim Stretches

You can get a lot of different looks with vintage denim, but if you want a pair that's tight along the waist and butt remember that denim stretches. While you're wearing your jeans, they can stretch out .5-1". You don't want to be uncomfortable when you first put them on, but you don't necessarily need tons of extra space.

3. Keep an Open Mind

This is key. Many people get caught up in wanting a specific style like Levi's 501, or believing vintage jeans only look good on a certain body type. There are so many styles and brands to choose from with vintage denim if you're willing to search. Also equally important to keep your expectations in check - vintage denim will never fit like today's skinny jeans or jeggings unless they're altered.

4. Style Your Pair to Your Tastes

There's so many ways to rock vintage jeans and you can up your denim game by making some easy changes to your pair. You can always cuff your jeans or cut the bottom for a frayed edge (another big spring trend). Add patches to the pocket or take a razor to the knees to make the perfect distressed pair. No matter what we're convinced there's a perfect pair for everyone.

Transitioning from Winter to Spring Fashionably

Transitioning into your springtime wardrobe can be tricky, especially if you live in a finicky climate where one day is sunny and 60 degrees but the next is pouring rain and 40 (we feel you). In our experience, the best way to handle and enjoy the increasingly pleasant weather is through layering and styling your winter pieces appropriately with new spring ones. Read on to see how we're repurposing our winter faves for fresh spring looks!

Long Line Jacket

Remember the cute long line jacket you bought in the beginning of winter? Right before it actually got cold and you had to wear a sleeping bag to leave your apartment? Now is a great time to bust it back out. Pair it with some new spring staples, like cool jeans and backless loafers. Also, go for an easy sweater that you can layer with.

Scarf

Scarves are one of the most versatile pieces. They'll actually keep you warm, but are easy enough to throw into your bag when the sun starts shining. For spring, we're rocking our old winter scarf with a patchwork denim mini and adorable suede moto jacket. Warm weather also means getting to wear sneakers again, score!

Turtleneck

Even once spring weather is in full effect, nighttime can be chilly up until summer. We like to keep rocking our turtleneck, especially since it still looks chic with a leather skirt. No need for tights though! Simply accessorize with chunky booties and a cool purse and you're ready for a night out.

How to Throw an Arm Party

How to Throw an Arm Party

For spring, we love stacking bracelets and rings to create a fresh look that's unique every time. This can be a hard look to put together though if you're an accessory junkie with too many beloved pieces to choose from. Below we'll guide you on how to throw the perfect "arm party" with three different styles to inspire you.

One key to mastering this look is balancing statement pieces with smaller ones. Take our boho arm party that features a stunning cuff bracelet surrounded by cute beaded bracelets. We love continuing the sparkle from the bracelet charms with a pretty little ring.

Mandawa bracelet / Star becklette / Evil eye becklette / Beaded cross ring

Personalized jewelry is always good for showing off your unique style, especially when stacking bracelets and rings. For our preppy look we threw in a "mama" bracelet that we love, but you can really choose any piece that reflects who you are.

Baguette bar bracelet / Pearl becklette / Mama becklette / Gold ring

Our third style inspiration is a rocker look that reminds us when it comes to parties, there are no rules. Don't worry about making every piece of your arm party match, you can even mix and match metals like we did with silver and rose gold.

How to Rock a "Fashionista-Off-Duty" Look

How to Rock a "Fashionista-Off-Duty" Look

In between gushing over the new collections being shown at fashion week, we can't help but also envy all the amazing looks we see between shows. Over the past couple years street style during fashion month has grown to be nearly as important as the shows themselves. People have long emulated the famous model-off-duty style that says "yes, I look equally amazing in haute couture as I do in an oversized biker jacket and sneakers".  However, with the rise of street style, we've noticed pr girls, bloggers and plenty of other fashion insiders rocking that same, undeniable cool-girl style. So this week we're renaming the look "Fashionista-Off-Duty", read on to see how we rock it and shop!

The key to off-duty style is to mix trendy pieces with comfortable classics, creating a look that is fashion-forward, while still being functional. Add in different textures and personalized elements, and you'll have a look that is as unique as it is stylish.

For our look we paired these adorable pants with a vintage graphic tee, topped off with an edgy jacket, like this denim one and a pair of sneakers.

Adding Personality to your Personal Style

Adding Personality to your Personal Style

With every outfit put on, we all cultivate our own personal style. Whether it's classic feminine, rocker-chic or something else entirely, we use fashion to communicate messages to the world. Sometimes though it feels like everyone is dressed the same and you lose the "personal" element of personal style. Here are some easy ways to revamp your wardrobe with pieces and additions that will show off your unique personality:

Iron on patches and enamel pins are an easy way to express yourself. Add fun patches and pins to any article of clothing, from denim and leather jackets to handbags and backpacks. Tip: patches can always be sewed or glued onto non-heat withstanding fabrics.

Monogramming is not just for preps anymore. Many designers and companies are now offering monogramming and embroidery of their pieces, making each item feel one of a kind. Either opt for the classic initials or a short phrase you love.

Jewelry and accessories are of course one of our favorites ways to upgrade an outfit. Look for pieces that incorporate personal details, like your name or zodiac sign. There are tons of Etsy shops that will engrave or customize jewelry however you like so get creative.

Don't be afraid to take a scissors to old items in your closet that need a little makeover. Use a scissors, seam ripper and/or razor to create your own perfect pair of destroyed jeans. Old graphic tees can also be updated with a scissor for a new, cool silhouette.
